Samsung is not your average contender for home electronics. It is using their success in mobile products and online services to make the living room experience considerably better. Then you can add to the fact that Samsung makes some fantastic hardware. Samsung is definitely a frontrunner when it comes to innovation and they generally make the headlines every CES. The Samsung UN75HU8550 is no different as it symbolizes the new age of large, premium and affordable 4K displays.
The UN75HU8550 is a massive TV with a thin bezel. Since the bezel only measures 0.3 inches and the recommended viewing distance ranges to around 8 to 13 feet, the bezel is practically invisible. Samsung takes a minimalistic approach with the Samsung UN75HU8550 as you can’t really find much else other than that huge 75-inch panel, small Samsung logo on the bottom and a nice blue streak just below the logo. The stand gets a nice refreshing change with its flat base further contributing to the minimalistic appearance. The available connection ports are just about what you would expect from any modern large LED TV. 4 HDMI 2.0 ports are available while the 3 USB ports are a bit excessive although it does leave you with extra ports should you connect a wireless keyboard and mouse.
While the 2014 lineup of LED TVs opens up some nice and exclusive new features, high-end TVs like the UN75HU8550 still have the Smart Hub 2.0 component. It continues to be an important part of the TV and could very well be enough to eliminate the need to get a separate media player. Of course, there is no optical drive but you do get quick access to the Internet as there is a pretty good Web browser preinstalled on the Samsung UN75HU8550. Some websites can be difficult to navigate but that is where Samsung’s diverse app store comes in. Once you are connected to the Internet through the TV’s built-in Wi-Fi, you can immediately browse the store and install all sorts of useful apps, fun games, streaming services and news providers. The UN75HU8550 also makes it easy in handling your Facebook, Twitter and other social networking activities via a friendly panel. The TV may not be running Android but Samsung Galaxy users should be able to learn the interface rather quickly.
One of the hot new features of the Samsung UN75HU8550 is within the TV’s small but highly versatile Smart Remote Control. This small remote control alone can help you browse the Smart Hub in several but surprisingly smooth ways. The small touchpad on the center of the remote serves as a trigger where you can place your thumb and immediately start using this remote as a pointing device. Point the device to a spot in the screen and the cursor will go there. It feels like using a mouse which is nice because choosing an app to launch or even input text is pretty simple.
The Smart Remote Control is also a remote that you can talk directly to with the use of the Voice button. The UN75HU8550 not only recognizes some voice commands but it can also interpret words pretty well enabling you to do voice searches. This remote relies on Bluetooth so it is responsive even if the remote isn’t pointed directly at the screen from afar. It also feels very comfortable to the point that you might not even use the larger standard remote unless you need the numeric keypad to quickly change to the channel you want to watch.
Your own Samsung Galaxy smartphone or tablet (select models only) can serve as a remote control too if you decide to install the Smart View 2.0 app on the device. In addition to getting a cool onscreen remote interface, you can have the Samsung UN75HU8550 stream live TV content to the mobile device. While the live TV is playing back on the mobile device, you can let the TV do something else such as playing a Blu-ray movie. This highlights the impressive multitasking capabilities of the UN75HU8550. The mobile phone can also return the favor by sending mobile content to the screen.
Any other devices with the same app installed can queue their own stuff effectively transforming the TV into a nice multimedia jukebox. Another demonstration of the TV’s multitasking prowess can be witnessed in the new Quad Screen feature where you can view all sorts of live content in 3 separate screens and have access to a Web browser in the fourth. With a 75-inch TV, each of the 4 screens still look large and very sharp.
4K resolution has been around for a couple of years already but it can still be risky to purchase one considering the fact that there isn’t much 4K media out there. The standard continues to evolve and new standards may come out that most TVs may not understand. Fortunately, the One Connect Box component which is a part of the TV is replaceable so you can upgrade the TV to handle these 4K formats without the need to spend even more on a new TV. The Smart Evolution Kit can still be used if other features need upgrading. But with a speedy quad-core processor, there might not be a need to upgrade.
Even though many of your favorite movies are most probably not on 4K resolution, you can at least let the Samsung UN75HU8550 upscale the movie content to 4K and get a much better visual on the large display. The colors really pop and the contrast is fantastic thanks to technologies like UHD Dimming and Precision Black Local Dimming. It also has a high Clear Motion Rate of 1200 for very smooth and blur-free motions. Instant On also dramatically reduces the TV’s startup time. Also don’t forget that the UN75HU8550 has some fine 3D functions and comes with a few pairs of 3D glasses.
The 65-inch model of the HU8550 series could be the best buy because it costs about $3,500. But there is a real price to pay if you want to go even bigger. 10 inches is a massive difference though and it resulted to a TV that a lot of people are impressed in just because of its mesmerizing screen and large appearance. $5,999 is the current price of the Samsung UN75HU8550 and it quite reasonable given all those nice features.
