About the Samsung UN65JU7500
The UN65JU7500 represents the very best that a 4K UHD can offer at a sub-$3,000 price. Samsung has a history of raising the bar every year too making the Samsung UN65JU7500 even better than the company’s older 4K displays which were often far more expensive. Like other Samsung TVs in the JU7500, the UN65JU7500 has a curved profile. Curved TVs are nothing new but when Samsung’s first curved displays maxed out at only 1080p. The Samsung UN65JU7500 offers so much more including bundled 3D glasses so you can watch 3D movies with this TV as well. Even if curved displays don’t significantly enhance the movie experience for some people, it is impossible to deny how much more elegant and good-looking a curved display is and Samsung certainly knows how to design one.
The purpose of the JU7500 series is to demonstrate the most significant Ultra HD features to a broad audience. Samsung’s proprietary SUHD technology is left out simply because it is too expensive but the UN65JU7500 feels like a flagship TV. It even comes with a new Smart TV interface that flat out beats Samsung’s previous attempts to make a simple and intuitive GUI anybody can appreciate. It has shades of Samsung’s Tizen operating system and uses a quad-core processor so launching apps is a smooth affair. Some of the apps you can install to the TV include YouTube, Netflix, Hulu Plus and plenty of others. These apps conveniently appear on a horizontal menu bar on the bottom of the screen. This is clearly a page taken out of LG’s book with webOS and it isn’t bad. A Web browser app is included too and it works pretty well.
Cheaper Samsung also has cheaper 2015 models with the same Smart TV experience but the UN65JU7500 is one of the few models that comes with the Smart Remote Control. Samsung should have included this remote with every TV model because it makes it easier to use the Smart TV interface. You can switch channels or adjust the volume controls and have one-button access to the main Smart TV screen. From there, you can either use the directional buttons or the more efficient trackpad so you can really move the onscreen cursor to the app you want to load. The remote can listen and respond to voice commands too as it has a built-in microphone.
If you have one of Samsung’s popular Galaxy smartphones or tablets, you can also head to the Play Store and download the Smart View 2.0 app to make your mobile device more integrated with the Samsung UN65JU7500. The app acts as an alternative remote control that works over Wi-Fi and it provides a simple interface for sharing photos, videos and other stuff to the TV. When you are watching live TV, you can also use Smart View 2.0 to stream the live TV to your mobile device. The Smart View 2.0 app also has a PC version.
The UN65JU7500 is not the largest Samsung TV in the JU7500 family but it is still large enough to really appreciate the UHD resolution and that curved screen. If you take the standard viewing distance into account (about 7 feet away), everyone on the couch should be able to appreciate the amazing picture quality. Of course, this is something you have to experiment with but on a 65-inch display, the details are noticeably improved compared to a 1080p display. The curved screen is a lot more appreciable in real life compared to pictures so it is best to check it out on a store and see if it is worth the extra $100 to $200 premium.
The picture quality of the Samsung UN65JU7500 is so good that it makes the Samsung SUHD displays seem excessive. The expensive SUHD technology is supposed to make the 4K experience as realistic as possible but the UN65JU7500 gets by just fine because of a myriad of other Samsung technologies. It is as if Samsung threw every possible technology in except for the SUHD exclusive stuff and hoped for the best. Some of the notable technologies include the Precision Black technology which intelligently makes the blacks deeper without affecting the contrast of the rest of the image. The Auto Depth Enhancer uses similar algorithms to enhance specific areas of the image in different ways to create a better sense of depth and natural imagery. Then there is the Peak Illuminator which enables the display to show off more vibrant colors. Finally, the Samsung UN65JU7500 prevents annoying glares and reflections by sporting the Ultra Clear Pro panel.
The UN65JU7500 isn’t the best TV to use for gamers and sports fans due to the 120 Hz refresh rate but the Motion Rate 240 specification should be enough for most people who like watching movies of any genre. Judder is hardly noticeable and you can still configure the Auto Motion Plus setting to your liking.
• Picture quality is great for the price.
• Smart TV is easier to learn and more responsive previous TVs
• Curved displays are cool.
• Non-curved TVs are still cheaper and offer the same features.
The Samsung UN65JU7500 represents a huge win for Samsung in the 65-inch segment and it isn’t even a flagship model. SUHD TVs are just too expensive right now and it is hard to think of reasons to upgrade the UN65JU7500 to something else in the next 5 years or so.
