The price range of 4K TVs is pretty wide now, because the industry is focused on much more advanced things like curved screen, OLED technologies and even massive 8K panels. However, one of the main problems in shopping for 4K displays is determining if the low price is really a good deal. There are plenty of decent 4K displays priced at under $1,000 but you need to look at the compromises made. Sometimes the features are minimal but other times, the screen is too small and the picture quality for lower resolutions isn’t as great. There might even be times where a 1080p TV of the same size could be a better overall deal. Buying small 40-inch and 50-inch 4K displays is an affordable ticket to the inevitable surge of 4K content from physical media and the Web but going for something slightly bigger can be rewarding for your eyes. The Samsung UN65JU6500 is one of the several 4K displays that tries to be both large and inexpensive and it makes a good overall impression.

About the Samsung UN65JU6500
The UN65JU6500 has a lot of characteristics in terms of its positioning in the Samsung lineup and it is important to take note of them all. It is a 65-inch display and it is part of the JU6500 family which is positioned as the entry-level series of 4K displays. This specific model comes in 40-inch, 48-inch, 50-inch, 55-inch, 60-inch, and 75-inch flavors too. The 75-inch version might be too big for the living room and/or too expensive making the Samsung UN65JU6500 more attractive for a broader audience especially since it sells for under $2,500.
That price gives you a pretty generic TV design with a very high quality 4K panel. This compromise is certainly better than having a good design with a poor display. Straight and edgy appears to be the central themes to this design judging from the horizontal stand, lack of curves and fairly thick bezels. It is one of those displays where the size is the main attraction and for people with large living rooms, it makes up for it nicely. The 4 HDMI ports means that you can connect a number of components to the TV as well.
Those with old first-gen Samsung LCD displays that have the Smart Hub will find the UN65JU6500 to be an excellent upgrade and it isn’t just because of the Ultra HD screen alone. The new Tizen-powered Smart TV interface is refreshingly simple and launching essential streaming apps like YouTube, Hulu Plus, and Netflix are just a couple of button presses away. The single app bar that shows up on the bottom is a great way to convince people that never cared about Internet features to give them a chance. The quad-core processor doesn’t disappoint either as the apps load fairly quickly. Among the available apps is the Web browser app which looks a bit like the standard browser on Samsung Galaxy devices. Unfortunately, the TV doesn’t come with the special Samsung Remote Control which has a trackpad. It would be much better to connect an HTPC to the TV along with a wireless keyboard and mouse and enjoy a true 4K browsing experience.
Your only other option for controlling the Samsung UN65JU6500 remotely is through a special free Android app called Smart View 2.0. It only works with select Samsung Galaxy smartphones and tablets as well as certain Windows PCs and laptops but when it works, it is pretty cool. Not only are you presented with onscreen touch controls but you can also easily share media to and from the device. Mirroring live television to a smartphone, tablet or laptop is the coolest part.
3 USB ports might seem a bit excessive but it lets you leave an external hard disk plugged in while leaving the TV still open for a flash drive or perhaps a camera so you can easily view images and videos on the screen. It uses the same ConnectShare Movie feature so supported audio and video file types is pretty adequate.
The UN65JU6500 harnesses a lot of technologies to bring out very good picture quality for the price. On the surface, it starts with an Ultra Clear Panel which effectively absorbs ambient light softening the reflections in the process. A couple of other technologies including the UHD Dimming and Contrast Enhancer help greatly with the contrast levels resulting to impressively deep blacks. It also uses a special color enhancing technology called PurColor which intelligently blends primary and secondary colors to create a more accurate picture. This level of color accuracy is most noticeable when viewing 4K content since it provides 4 times more detail than 1080p content.
While 1080p content doesn’t make full use of the display, the Samsung UN65JU6500 still manages to show off Full HD visuals far better than Samsung’s usual 1080p displays. The UN65JU6500 is capable of upscaling 1080p content without any additional hardware.
In order for Samsung to cram all these cool features and keep the price low, Samsung had to compromise with the refresh rate. It has a Samsung Motion Rate of 120 which is basically a 60 Hz refresh rate. This means judder can be noticeable in certain low resolution movie scenes. There is also some noticeable lag when watching fast action sports. Fortunately, this compromise doesn’t affect a lot of scenarios
• Fantastic picture quality for both 4K and 1080p content.
• Costs under $2,500.
• Fresh Smart TV interface.
• Simplistic design isn’t for everyone.
• Not the best TV for watching action-packed scenes due to low refresh rate.
• Smart Remote Control included in the package.
The Samsung UN65JU6500 is more than just a smart 4K TV; it is the result of some very smart decisions by Samsung to use advanced technologies to boost the picture quality while trimming down on things that not everyone will care about just to hit the low price tag. Samsung isn’t snubbing those people that want a better refresh rate, design and remote control either because there is the Samsung UN65JU7100 which costs a few hundred dollars more and lacks those shortcomings.
