Deciding on a 4K TV can be pretty tricky because they are often reviewed as “step-up” models to the aging 1080p TVs. When you are buying even a cheap 4K TV, you get that feeling that you are getting something with significantly better picture quality due to the extra pixels. That’s how it used to be a couple of years back but things are different now. 1080p displays are much cheaper and there are now budget 4K displays that may have more compromises than high-end 1080p TVs. If you really want to get a true high-end TV, you still have to think big as in $3,000+ budget especially if you are after a 65-inch TV. The Samsung UN65JS8500 is one of the contenders in this price level and its main challenge is providing if the extra money is worth the purchase over a cheaper 4K TV.

About the Samsung UN65JS8500
The UN65JS8500 is a 4K LED TV that uses Samsung’s proprietary SUHD technology. SUHD primarily focuses on color accuracy but this particular model isn’t highest-end model. Instead, it is currently the cheapest 65-inch SUHD display and is priced at a cool $3,000. $3,000 is actually a pretty cheap price for an SUHD because many of the current features can be found on higher-end models. One of the main reasons as to why the Samsung UN65JS8500 costs around $300 to $500 less is flat display design. Samsung’s pricier SUHD models are all curved screens. Curved screens arguably don’t contribute much other than aesthetics making the UN65JS8500 a more sensible buy for TV enthusiasts that don’t have too much money to burn.
Besides, the Samsung UN65JS8500 is still a very beautiful TV with silver accents on the bezel and base and a very thin bezel to begin with. It is also packed with connectivity options. You get 4 HDMI 2.0 ports along with 3 USB ports and the rest of the usual ports a modern LED TV has.
The UN65JS8500 and other models in the JS family also highlight the future of Tizen. Tizen started out as a mobile operating system and recently found its way to Samsung Smart TVs. After testing the operating system, it is easy to conclude that Tizen is a real upgrade as the menus are responsive and the interface is friendlier than ever. Even the app ecosystem delivers as it offers several services that take the form of apps and many of them take advantage of 4K Ultra HD.
Like the older high-end Samsung TVs, the Samsung UN65JS8500 comes with a special and skinny secondary remote control made for Smart TV operations. Using the apps is much easier with the remote as you can use it a pointing device. Plus the remote supports voice command recognition. Certain Samsung Galaxy models can control the UN65JS8500 as well and even share content.
The anatomy of the SUHD technology really helps the UN65JS8500 attain unprecedented color accuracy for an edge-lit LED display. The panel itself boasts Nano-crystal technology which is basically Samsung’s approach to using quantum dots in the backlighting resulting to a wider color gamut. The overall picture quality is then enhanced by the Peak Illuminator Pro technology which is something you won’t find in lower-end SUHD models. It even gets better when playing back High Dynamic Range content. The Samsung UN65JS8500 fully supports HDR although the technology is still very new and hasn’t really hit the Blu-ray mainstream yet. This means that you can expect to see even better-looking movies as studios adopt this emerging trend.
There are a good number of affordable 4K TVs with great color and fine details but lacking in the contrast. The Precision Black Technology also makes a big contribution here and really makes the SUHD feel like something that enhances every aspect of the picture. It isn’t as great as OLED technologies but the blacks are impressively dark and it doesn’t affect any of the brighter elements in the scene. It even has its own contrast enhancer algorithm so multiple zones on the screen have their own special optimizations to make sure all those fine color enhancements made by SUHD aren’t affected. The best part is that even 1080p content looks good and the 4K upscaling engine works remarkably well. Motion Rate 240 is just icing on the cake boasting 120 Hz refresh rate for blur-free playback of high-speed scenes. It does not have the Auto Depth Enhancer found in the JS9000 series but it doesn’t really need it since the screen is flat.
The UN65JS8500 isn’t immune to edge bleed though. It is pretty much the only weakness of the display and it is pretty minor. The annoyance is most obvious when watching content with black bars or letterboxes or when watching in a very dark room.
• SUHD really makes the case for very good picture quality.
• Samsung’s other technologies contribute to the overall presentation as well.
• Attractive design.
• Display is not curved which means a more reasonable price tag.
• Ready for HDR content.
• Good upscaling engine.
• Tizen is very impressive.
• Backlight bleeding is still a minor problem.
• You can still buy a slightly less impressive TV for much cheaper.
SUHD is still a pretty expensive technology although it is not as expensive as the vastly superior OLED technology. Still, the Samsung UN65JS8500 is an edge-lit TV and that means you get both the energy efficient qualities and the great picture quality. You will definitely get your money’s worth if you expect near flawless imagery.
