Every year, Samsung introduces some breakthrough technology to disrupt the TV industry. One year it was feature-packed 4K displays and another year it was curved OLED TVs. Oftentimes, these cutting-edge displays have exorbitant price tags that only wealthy early-adopters would consider. But there is some good news behind these breakthroughs – ordinary TVs get cheaper. And while 1080p TVs have been cheap for the past couple of years, Samsung’s newest 1080p displays are not only cheap but pretty large, too. The Samsung UN65J6300 is one of the TVs that represent Samsung’s current position in the midrange category of large displays.

About the Samsung UN65J6300
The UN65J6300 is a member of Samsung’s Series 6 family of 2015. It is the 65-inch version of the J6300 model which also comes in 32-inch, 50-inch, 55-inch, 60-inch, and 75-inch flavors. The Samsung UN65J6300 in particular is quite unique because it is both large and it has a very nice silvery stand that splits like a wide “V” and is almost as wide as the display itself. It looks refreshingly minimal and that thin bezel really makes the screen attractive looking from afar. It also looks more attractive than the more basic UN65J6200.
Priced in the $1,600 to $1,700 range, the UN65J6300 is quite affordable especially when you consider competing 65-inch 4K displays that sell for more than $2,000. Samsung’s entry-level 65-inch 4K display starts at $2,000 already and it has a thicker bezel. It is also a step up from the Samsung UN65J6200 which is also a 2015 model and costs only $1,300 with a reduced feature set. Unlike the 55-inch and smaller variants, the Samsung UN65J6300 has a total of 4 HDMI ports and 3 USB ports. Wi-Fi is built right into the display as well.
The UN65J6300 can also be considered as a successor to last year’s UN65H6350 model and it comes with a full overhaul of the Smart Hub. Samsung now refers to this interface as “Smart TV” and it is far less intimidating as the app selection menu takes place on the bottom portion of the screen. You just pick a tile and you load the app. It comes with a basic selection of Smart TV apps including Hulu Plus, Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Instant Video and several others. The Web browser has been improved, too, though you are only limited to using the standard remote control. The cheaper UN65J6200 has these Smart TV features too but Samsung UN65J6300 feels faster because it has a quad-core processor.
Samsung is also one of those companies that want to reward users for being heavily invested in the company’s ecosystem. If you have a recent Samsung Galaxy flagship smartphone or tablet, you can download the free Smart View 2.0 app and link the mobile device to the TV for convenient media sharing and local streaming. This all works wirelessly and even comes with a nice feature that mirrors the TV’s screen to your device. PC and laptop owners can download the Windows version of the Smart View 2.0 app as well and enjoy similar functionality. Device compatibility is spotty, so having a Samsung laptop is recommended.
Those that prefer the traditional way of enjoying downloaded media can use the ConnectShare Movie feature. All you have to do is load your USB flash drive or external storage device with movies and other videos and plug it right into the TV. Like older Samsung models, the UN65J6300 can handle formats like MP4 and MKV complete with subtitle support. Since most camcorders and cameras can act as USB storage devices, they can be plugged into the TV, too.
The Samsung UN65J6300 has one major feature that separates itself from the J6200 version and that’s the Samsung Micro Dimming Pro technology. In fact, it is the best part of the TV because makes the picture quality so much better. This technology isn’t exactly new but it is taken from Samsung’s older flagship models. That makes it more impressive because buyers on a budget don’t have to spend the extra premium especially if they don’t have 4K content to play back. The UN65J6300 is still a 1080p TV and connecting a PC or laptop to the TV means that you’ll have to deal with very large text and icons but once you fire up your favorite movie or streaming service, the amazing picture quality can be noticed. Blacks are very deep and the color is fantastic thanks to the Wide Color Enhancer.
The Motion Rate 120 specification serves as a reminder that the Samsung UN65J6300 is still a midrange model and it translates to a 60 Hz frame rate. This isn’t exactly impressive for high-speed gaming but it should satisfy casual channel surfers and just about anyone wanting to game on a 65-inch display without spending so much.
The UN65J6300 also has an Eco Sensor which you can use to cut down on energy usage if you are okay with a slightly dim display. The backlight adjusts automatically depending on the lighting in your room. It is also nice to see built-in support for DTS Premium Sound which means 5.1-channel surround sound support right out of the box. The sound is noticeably better than the average TV especially when listening to a lot of dialogue or bass but a sound bar still serves as a big leap. The TV matches well with Samsung’s HW-J550 sound bar.
• Micro Dimming Pro greatly contributes to the great overall picture quality.
• Refined Smart TV interface is more user-friendly and not as overwhelming as the older design.
• Speedy performance thanks to the quad-core processor.
• More attractive than the UN65J6200.
• Reasonable $1,700 price tag.
• 65-inch 4K displays look noticeably better.
• Lacks a smart remote control.
The Samsung UN65J6300 isn’t the cheapest Samsung 65-inch display but it is worth saving up for because watching usual Blu-ray movies and TV shows look fantastic. 4K is the future but the content isn’t here yet. 1080p will still have its place for unforeseeable future and still looks good today.
