Figuring out exactly how much you should spend on a 4K TV isn’t really easy. On paper, getting a 4K display sounds absolutely crucial since ultra-high resolution TVs have been around for years and next year could finally be the year big content creators go nuts with UHD media. Although the price of 4K TVs have gone down significantly over the years, 1080p TVs are still considerably cheaper and that could be a huge deal especially if you are shooting for a 60-inch 1080p TV. However, smaller 4K displays can be just as cheap. Even though these small 4K displays are superior in specs, your eyes may not be able to tell the difference. Therefore, you could be getting more bang for your buck if you go for a larger budget 4K TV. Fortunately, there is a 4K TV known as the Samsung UN60JU6400 which brings UHD to the low-end.

About the Samsung UN60JU6400
The UN60JU6400 is a 60-inch Samsung TV with a 4K resolution panel. 60 inches is an ideal budget size for really appreciating the 4K resolution. Samsung really didn’t try too hard with the design of the Samsung UN60JU6400 but the all black design and fairly thin bezels still make the TV look modern and far better looking than budget Samsung displays in the past. The TV is also not curved but that doesn’t mean it looks outdated. You can still use a 400×400 VESA mount to attach the TV to the wall and it should look great.
Priced at around $1,700, it is expected for the UN60JU6400 to be missing a lot of fancy technologies that you will find on a flagship 60-inch TV that costs almost twice as much. Samsung’s proprietary SUHD technology is completely absent and you won’t find cutting-edge features like HDR support and the upgradable OneConnect module but it surprisingly shares a few characteristics that pricier models have. Even though OneConnect modules are pretty expensive, it is a little bit disappointing not to see it in the Samsung UN60JU6400 since the TV only comes with 3 HDMI 2.0 ports.
If there is one theme that ties the entire 2015 lineup together, it is the new and improved Smart TV experience. Samsung is very serious with their Tizen operating system to the point that the Korean giant is offering an upgrade path for older Samsung TVs to enjoy smartphone-based platform. But getting a TV like the Samsung UN60JU6400 with Tizen installed right out of the box is still most ideal because it has an updated quad-core processor that really takes advantage of Tizen’s performance optimizations. Tizen is a far more polished and speedy Smart TV platform than Samsung’s previous efforts and it has some pretty amazing apps to boot including HBO GO and plenty of other apps that utilize the 4K resolution panel. On top of that, the interface looks modern, fresh, full of life and has a robust Web browser. Unlike the higher-end Samsung models, the UN60JU6400 doesn’t come with Samsung’s smart remote so navigating certain apps can feel a bit traditional but at least the performance is good.
Like every other modern Samsung TV, you can use the two available USB ports to take advantage of the ConnectShare Movie feature to play back music and videos. Samsung TV’s are known to support lots of formats and it continues to be a reliable way to play back HD video considering how cheap flash drives are.
Even with low expectations on a budget TV, the Samsung UN60JU6400 is amazing for an entry-level model. Samsung managed to put in the PurColor technology to improve the accuracy of certain color shades by combing primary and secondary colors together. It also uses a UHD dimming technology to enhance the details and contribute with the deep blacks. Do not confuse this with Local Dimming which vastly improves the contrast. UHD dimming is like a poor man’s Local Dimming and the results aren’t too shabby. To ensure that there is a greater sense of depth even with these deep black optimizations, the UN60JU6400 also uses a Contrast Enhancer. It also uses an Ultra Clear Panel to make sure any ambient light is sucked up to minimize glare.
The UHD Upscaling has to be one of the better features and it is really nice to see Samsung nailing this key feature because it makes the wait for 4K content a bit easier. Existing 1080p movies look fantastic on the 60-inch screen. The latest and greatest 60-inch TV still looks better in terms of color accuracy and contrast but the positive differences are more noticeable when compared to an older 1080p 60-inch TV. The 120 Hz refresh rate helps too when viewing high-quality sports programming or action movies.
• Good set of picture enhancing technologies for the price.
• Full Tizen Smart TV onboard and it’s great
• UHD upscaling is very good.
• Very reasonable $1,500 to $1,700 price range.
• TVs with Local Dimming are still better.
• Only 3 HDMI ports with no option to upgrade.
• No Smart Remote included.
The Samsung UN60JU6400 is a TV that an ordinary consumer on a sub-$2,000 budget can appreciate. It is large, the display is great and the full Tizen experience is a cool added bonus. It is likely to bring more surprises to a new buyer who didn’t check out Samsung’s official product page. That being said, saving a few hundred dollars on a higher-end model means even better picture quality, a fourth HDMI port and a Smart Remote which makes Tizen so much better.
