There will never be a perfect TV for every household these days and that is why you will find yourself choosing from dozens of available TVs even if you narrow it down to a single company and focus on the very latest models. But the lower the price of the TV, the more appeal it has to the average consumer especially when you go below the $1,000 barrier. To achieve such a low price point, you can either go for a very basic TV, where you still have various sizes to pick from, or you can settle for a slightly more advanced TV that is a bit smaller. The Samsung UN46F6400 fits the small, but advanced category and the low price tag could make the UN46F6400 one of the best bang for the buck Samsung TVs.
The Samsung UN46F6400 may lack that the highly sophisticated design that the flagship UN46F8000 has but the UN46F6400 still looks fairly modern as the overall display is pretty thin as well as the bezel surrounding the screen. The quad stand keeps the TV in place and is roughly half the width of the display so you should be able to place it on most surfaces. This stand also allows you to swivel the display left or right up to 10 degrees.
Those without HDMI splitters and AV receivers should still be able to set up a small home theater system since the 4 HDMI ports featured on the Samsung UN46F6400 should be sufficient. There is also a trio of USB ports which means that the TV is capable of managing multiple flash and external USB drives. Through the TV’s ConnectShare Movie feature, flash drives containing AVI, ASF, JPEG, MP3 and a number of other file types are supported. If only need to plug just one drive, you can leave the other ports vacant for any spare USB mouse or keyboard which can be used to operate the Internet aspects of this TV.
The UN46F6400 isn’t the only 2013 member of Samsung’s Series 6 family. There is also the cheaper UN46F6300 but the Samsung UN46F6400 is vastly superior because of its Micro Dimming technology. The F6400 is the better deal if you want slightly better contrast and improved deep black levels. Micro Dimming also reduces glaring and you get brighter visuals even during the day.
Active 3D support is another extra that you only get with the UN46F6400 and higher-end models. The depth of the 3D effect is pretty impressive so it is worth enabling this feature if you have a supported 3D Blu-ray player with matching 3D content. Otherwise, you may use the 2D to 3D conversion feature which does an exceptional job creating 3D effects for content that do not natively support 3D.
The Samsung UN46F6400 also commands a CMR or Clear Motion Rate value that is twice as much as the CMR value of the slightly cheaper UN64F6300 model. A CMR of 480 is still in the midrange when you consider the Series 7 and 8 models but the UN46F6400 is still the cheapest 46-inch Samsung LED TV with a refresh rate of 240 Hz. Combined with the special backlight technology and speed of the image processor, motion-clarity is a lot more emphasized with better blur reduction. Fans of sports channels will get a more superior experience with the Samsung UN46F6400 as a result.
You also get a near-complete Smart TV experience with the UN46F6400 thanks to the Smart Touch remote control that is included along with the usual remote. Not included in the F6300 series, this rather compact remote puts buttons like the Smart Hub and TV Guide in the spotlight for direct access. Once you see the Smart Hub’s tablet-like UI, you can use the touchpad navigate it. This touchpad can be used to operate various apps too including the built-in Web browser that is just one of the apps available for this TV. This secondary remote control comes with a couple of other extras too. The remote’s built-in microphone enables you to issue a few natural voice commands to jump to a certain part of the interface or get content recommendations. It also has the essential buttons in case you need to change the channels or adjust the volume levels.
The Smart Hub interface of the Samsung UN46F6400 looks considerably different than the older TVs that featured it. It is easier to check out the different tabs and there are dedicated sections for checking social updates, checking TV recommendations, viewing files on the network, browsing TV and movie catalogs and launching and installing apps. The dual core processor helped with the overall performance although there are some noticeable instances of lag.
The app selection is more than sufficient since Samsung has been building their Smart TV ecosystem for quite some time. The heavyweight services are, of course, available including YouTube, Netflix, Amazon, Vudu and dozens of others. Other apps focus more on delivering news and providing some interactive entertainment. Then there is the Skype app which lets you chat with other Skype users although you need a separate camera accessory to video chat as any regular USB webcam won’t work.
Good LED TVs are known to be more environmental friendly and the UN46F6400 goes beyond the achievement by scoring Energy Star 6.0 compliance exceeding the requirements that Energy Star brings. Like Samsung’s other LED displays, you can rely on the Samsung Eco Sensor to handle the brightness settings automatically based on the amount of lighting you already have in the room.
The Samsung UN46F6400 successfully hits that nice sweet spot just under $900 and you get pretty good image quality and plenty of nifty features to have fun with. You will have to spend a bit more if you need superior black levels and contrast and a speedier processor. Going for a bigger model for the same price means that you have to forgo some of the features including the impressive Micro Dimming and 3D technologies.
