65-inch TVs are a lot larger than they sound. Get a tape measure and you might even find out that your living room doesn’t even have the sufficient space or surface for such a massive TV. The price of these large displays is something to worry about as well but fortunately, it is no longer 2008. We have finally reached a point where you can buy a decently spec’d TV for around $1,500 or possibly lower. Of course, these TVs don’t exactly have the best picture quality and may have a limited feature set but they are a lot more affordable compared to those $5,000+ 4K and curved displays. 4K ultra-high-definition TVs are very impressive but they don’t exactly make all 1080p TVs look bad. Panasonic is still on fire with their plasma displays and their lineup includes the Panasonic TC-P65ZT60 which could very well be the best 1080p TV if picture quality is your main concern.
Plasma displays aren’t exactly the best looking displays when you put them right next to LED displays but once again, a TV with a 65-inch screen is huge and it should look great in any large living room. The TC-P65ZT60 certainly lacks all the innovative design accents that the Panasonic TC-LWT60 LED displays possess but it still manages to be thin thanks to the display’s single sheet glass approach. The chrome bezels are not as “pencil-thin” as the bezels you would typically see in a flagship LED display but they still give the TV a premium feel. But if you are looking for those forward-facing speakers found in the more affordable Panasonic plasma TC-P65VT60 model, you will be disappointed as the lack of said speakers brings the audio quality down to average. The V-shaped stand that supports the display shares a similar design with other Panasonic plasma TVs and non-flagship LEDs and the flat chrome base is a nice elegant touch.
Currently, plasma TVs are still the best choice if you want the best overall picture quality due to superior contrast ratios. But out of the available plasma TVs, it is the Panasonic TC-P65ZT60 that stands on top because it is a plasma display that has the very best of Panasonic’s technologies. The fact that the TC-P65ZT60 has THX 3D certification pretty much sums it up but the panel makes this TV even better than other THX-certified models. The panel features an updated version of Panasonic’s Neo Plasma technology called Neo Plasma Black 3000 allows more light to be emitted through the panel. This leads to black levels that are far deeper than any other displays and a whopping DCI 98% color space which translates to very good color accuracy. With its 3000 Focused Field Drive, the display can also render fast-moving images while retaining their sharpness making this TV perfect for sports and any fast-paced movies. The Panasonic TC-P65VT60 features these technologies too and even costs a few hundred dollars less but the Ultimate Black filter exclusively featured on the Panasonic TC-P65ZT60 and its 60-inch variant makes all the difference. Both the TC-P65ZT60 and TC-P65VT60 should have similar picture quality in a dimly-lit room but the Panasonic TC-P65ZT60 maintains that quality even if the lighting gets brighter. The brightness doesn’t match the Samsung PNF8500 but it comes pretty close. Due to the display’s plasma nature, the TC-P65ZT60 does sip more power than 65-inch LED displays but it still manages to get Energy Star compliance.
The 3D performance of the Panasonic TC-P65ZT60 is pretty good and the tested Blu-ray movies look great. 2 pairs of 3D glasses are included so you can enjoy a movie with another person. The 2D to 3D conversion feature is also available in case the movie or TV program doesn’t support 3D.
The vast number of extra features is enough for the TC-P65ZT60 to compete against smart TVs as well. The TV is well-equipped with built-in Wi-Fi for easy connectivity to routers, Bluetooth to allow streaming support from older devices, and a few USB ports and an SD card slot in case you have pictures, videos and music files stored in flash drives and memory cards. An Ethernet port is also available if you like to stream content stored in another computers and you want the fastest local network speeds possible. It is a bit disappointing though that the Panasonic TC-P65ZT60 only has 3 HDMI ports which is quite a low for a flagship model.
Panasonic’s VIERA Connect platform allows you to use the TC-P65ZT60 to access the Internet. This platform is a joy to use because the My Home Screen interface provides a PC-like experience where you can put shortcuts to your favorite apps and widgets would provide useful details at a glance such as the date, time and reminders. The wallpaper on the home screen can be changed to any image you like. VIERA Connect has been around for quite a while so you can expect plenty of apps to install ranging from Facebook and Twitter to Hulu Plus, YouTube, Netflix and Amazon Instant Video. The web browser app allows you to check out virtually any other site or service you like and the dual-core hexa-processing engine should enable the web browser to handle web applications as well.
Included with the TV is the VIERA Touchpad Controller which is designed to make the VIERA Connect more pleasant to use. The remote’s built-in touchpad helps a lot when using apps like the web browser and the built-in microphone makes text inputs through voice easy too. The VIERA Remote 2 app which can be installed to Android and iOS devices can serve as an alternative remote control. This app features the Swipe & Share function allowing you to swipe content such as pictures so they show up on the screen.
The Panasonic TC-P65ZT60 is currently the best 1080p money can buy if you are purely after the image quality. OLED and 4K displays have superior technologies but they are still expensive. If you don’t need the extra brightness benefits that the Ultimate Black filter provides, you can save a considerable amount of money by getting the Panasonic TC-P65VT60 which should give you the exact same experience (plus the cool front-facing speakers and built-in camera too) and picture quality in rooms with dim lighting.
