Last August 2012, Sony announced an 84-inch 4K display with a gargantuan $25,000 price tag. LG then followed shortly with its own 84-inch TV and while it is more competitively priced, the $20,000 tag means the 4K technology still isn’t for the living room of most consumers. Things are changing though as 4K panels make their way to 55-inch models so you can expect the price to dip to 4-digit figures. Even LG’s flagship LG 55LA9700 model manages to go below the $5,000 mark but it isn’t without competition. TV manufacturers continue to make great 1080p LED 55-inch models for even lower prices. Convincing the average consumer to consider a 4K display won’t be easy but the 55LA9700 aims to be more than just a 4K display.
LG is known for having lots of different models each with their own unique designs. The company has reserved something special for the design of the LG 55LA9700. The display’s bezel is pretty thin although it is black so it is quite visible. But the TV’s stand makes the 55LA9700 look very elegant as a whole. The rectangular metal stand is nearly the same width as the TV itself. It is designed this way because the LG 55LA9700 has a hidden rectangular speaker that protrudes downward. That isn’t the TV’s only trick either because there is a hidden camera which can slide out from the top panel as well. Design-wise the LG 55LA9700 is one of the coolest TVs around.
One of the oddities of the 55LA9700 is the number of HDMI inputs available. Only 3 HDMI inputs can be found on the side which is strange as the cheaper 55LA9650 4K TV has 4 HDMI inputs. It does have 3 USB ports which is a bit too much although one of them is a USB 3.0 port for faster read speeds when a USB 3.0 compatible storage device is plugged in.
The LG 55LA9700 offers a similar LG Smart TV experience as its cheaper LA9650 counterpart. It has built-in Wi-Fi so it takes fewer steps to get the TV connected to the Internet. Getting to the LG Smart TV is just a button press away although it is most ideal to use the LG Magic Remote that comes with the package. This secondary remote is actually an improved version of LG’s first attempt at creating a better remote for using the Smart TV features. The button placement is better and some of the key buttons have some bumps for easy access even in dark environments. The LG Magic Remote can be used as a pointing device where you can point the remote to the spot where you want to move the onscreen cursor. This eliminates the need for directional buttons. The remote can also be used as a basic TV remote as you can adjust the volume, activate the 3D function and change the channel. If you want to go to a specific channel, you have to either use the ordinary LG remote which is also bundled or draw a number in the air
using the LG Magic Remote which highlights the remote’s support for gestures. The LG Magic Remote also has a built-in microphone so you can give out certain voice commands to quickly tell the TV what to do.
Like a smartphone or tablet, you can access an online marketplace from the TV where you can download apps such as Facebook and YouTube. The most appealing apps in the marketplace are the ones that support audio and/or video streaming like Netflix, Hulu Plus and others. Because of the versatility of the LG Magic Remote, you can also find plenty of fun games that are free to download and don’t require any other hardware. Once you have downloaded many apps, you will notice how cluttered the LG Smart TV looks but the LG Magic Remote makes navigation easier. The TV’s dual-core processor also contributes to low loading times when launching apps. There is also a downloadable Skype app and with the TV’s built-in camera, all you really need to get started with video calls is a Microsoft account.
The 55LA9700 also works as a 3D TV so you can connect any 3D-enabled home theater components that you may have. If you have a gaming console that supports 3D such as the Xbox 360, you might be able to take advantage of the Dual Play feature which makes certain local multiplayer games a lot more enjoyable. Not many games support this feature right now, but it if it does, both players wearing 3D glasses can enjoy different full-screen perspectives when playing sessions that normally split the screen in half. 4 passive 3D glasses are included and all do not require batteries.
Don’t be fooled by the small increase in number between the LG 55LA9650 and LG 55LA9700 models because the 55LA9700 has many exclusive improvements. The main feature that contributes to the excellent picture quality is the Nano Full LED technology. This technology makes use of up to 144 blocks of LEDs that independently switch off or adjust in brightness to better define the bright and dark spots of an image. The Nano Full LED technology also improves color contrast and viewing angles so more people can appreciate the 4K resolution.
4K resolution translates to 3840 x 2160 pixels making the picture very sharp on a 55-inch display. Because of the size of this display, you might not be able to notice the difference if you are viewing the TV from too far. But get a bit closer and watch 4K content and it is easy to see the vast improvements. 1080p content and lower resolutions also look good because of the way the Resolution Upscaler technology works. The display also boasts TruMotion 240Hz which means that sports channels and action movies look great without all the blurring.
The speaker that slides out from the bottom is another feature exclusive to the LA9700 models. The audio quality doesn’t exactly mimic a nice sound bar but it does make the TV sound better than most other TVs with built-in speakers. A subwoofer is built into the display as well which helps with the bass.
The LG 55LA9700 is still priced in the luxury territory at $4499 but if you compare it with those massive 4K displays that are still priced at over $10,000, the 55LA9700 becomes a more reasonable choice. If you are willing to sacrifice the cool speaker and Nano Full LED tech, you can spend $4999 for the larger 65LA9650 which better highlights the 4K resolution.
